Splash Mountain

This is the ride everybody races to when the park first opens and during peak season it is probably the only time you can assure yourself of not facing at least an hour-long line. This flume ride has it all. Based on 1946 "Song of the South" you follow Brer Rabbit as he avoids the sinister yet incapable Brer Fox and Brer Bear. The ride is long, filled with great animatronic scenes and even a double-dip slide in the dark. The finale, clearly visible to anybody nearby, is a 52 1/2 feet drop, at a 47 degree angle, into a briar patch for a wet finale. You will get wet on this. Since the ride uses water canons to accentuate the finale, probably the most dangerous spot to get soaked isn't the final drop itself but rather the random passengers who are readying to go uphill as a passing flume slides down and triggers the water eruption. With a 40-inch height requirement it is unfortunate that the very young do not have a shot at seeing the colorful interior, but Disney has set up a shady play area perfect for kids in waiting.

The best place to enjoy Walt Disney World is by staying at one of the park's many onsite resort hotels which offer early entry into the parks and are available as value, moderate and deluxe lodging alternatives.
